Shubman Gill played a perfect captain's knock in the first innings of the second Test match between India and England at Edgbaston, helping his team post a mammoth total of 587.

The India skipper scored a brilliant double century and finished with 267 runs, the highest score by an Indian in England.

With what was also his maiden double century, he became the first Asian captain to hit a 200 in a SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand and Australia) country.

As Gill created multiple records at Edgbaston, former India wicket-keeper batter Parthiv Patel drew a comparison between the India captain and stalwart Virat Kohli.

Patel hailed Gill for the marvellous innings, while claiming that it is only a matter of time before the 25-year-old rightfully takes the 'King' title from Kohli. Interestingly, Gill has been nicknamed 'Prince' by fans and pundits and it appears the young apprentice is set to take over the master's throne.

Patel specifically drew comparisons between Kohli's performance as captain in England in 2018 and Gill now.

What did Parthiv Patel say about Shubman Gill?

Speaking on Star Sports, while on commentary duty, Patel said: "There is a commonality. When the 2018 tour started, there were questions about whether Virat Kohli could bat well and score a hundred in England. There were scars from the 2014 tour. Same thing here.

"Questions on Gill before this tour started were that he had no hundred in SENA countries. There were questions on ability and skill. Both batters proved it. Kohli did it in 2018, and Gill has done it in 2025. There is 'Prince' written on his bat, but he is going to be 'King' soon."

Gill will now hope he can also lead his team to a win and equalise the series before heading to Lord's.
