The Denver Broncos didn't have a punter on their roster this offseason after losing Riley Dixon to free agency. They decided to bring in veteran Matt Haack, but he will never play for the team as he was released on Friday.
The Broncos used their sixth-round draft pick to select Florida punter Jeremy Crawshaw. That put Haack behind the proverbial 8-ball in the kicking competition, but as it turns out, there will be no competition. Crawshaw has already won the job.
Crawshaw had a 46.4-yard average on 190 punts in college. He played in 53 games for the Gators and was the only punter selected in this year's draft.
Haack, who has kicked for five different teams, will now have to wait and see if another team needs a punter this offseason.
In addition to releasing Haack, the Broncos also moved on from long snapper Zach Triner. He was brought in to provide some competition for Mitchell Fraboni, who has been the team's long snapper for the past three seasons, but the Broncos apparently already saw enough in that battle as well.
The moves get the Broncos down to the league-mandated 90-man roster.
