The Boston Red Sox were expected to be a clear contender in 2025 after having made some very impactful offseason moves. However, they are 29-33 and sit nine games back of first place in the American League East.

They could potentially look to sell this year at the trade deadline. How they play leading up to July 31 will dictate their strategy.

If they do sell, they have a few attractive pieces on expiring contracts.

Jeff Passan of ESPN lists right-hander Walker Buehler as the team's best trade chip.

"The Red Sox shouldn't be under .500. Regardless of the wounds -- both external and self-inflicted -- they are replete with enough talent to secure an AL playoff spot. If the ugliness continues, though, turning an eye toward 2026 is on the table," wrote Passan.

Buehler was signed to a one-year, $21.05 million contract after a resurgent postseason with the World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers.

With Boston, he has struggled, going 4-3 in nine starts with a 4.44 ERA. But given his track record, he could be an attractive piece at the trade deadline.

If last season was any indication, rental pitchers will generate big returns for selling teams, and Boston could certainly capitalize on Buehler's value rather than hold onto him and buy.

The 30-year-old right-hander isn't quite what he once was, but he still has a track record of postseason success, so a contending team could certainly show interest in him and try to gear up for a run.

We'll see what Boston decides to do with the two-time World Series champion.
