Why are Broncos and Dolphins playing a Suncorp double header? image

The two clubs have been sharing players (‘hello’ Selwyn) and a stadium for the past three seasons.

But Round 17 sees the South-East Queensland rivalry taken to a new level as Suncorp Stadium hosts its first ever Broncos-Dolphins NRL double header.

In what will be a ‘mini magic round’ of sorts, the Brisbane Broncos face the New Zealand Warriors at 3pm Saturday, before the stadium is emptied and then refilled for the Dolphins to host the South Sydney Rabbitohs at 7:50pm.

Unlike Magic Round, however, this weekend’s fixtures aren’t for NRL marketing or promotional purposes.

The historic NRL double header was forced by the Queensland weather more than three months ago—specifically, Tropical Cyclone Alfred which saw the Dolphins’ Round 1 ‘home’ game against the Rabbitohs urgently switched to CommBank Stadium in Sydney on March 7.

Saturday night’s clash has, in turn, become a Dolphins home game.

Beyond the actual matches themselves, there will be plenty of eyes on the respective crowd figures with both sides no doubt keen to claim bragging rights.

According to Austadiums data, the Broncos are averaging crowds of 39,833 for stand-alone home games at Suncorp in 2025.

The Dolphins have welcomed an average of 24,701 fans for Suncorp home matches this season.

* Figures exclude Magic Round 2025.
