New South Wales were looking to wrap up the three-match series and claim the shield in Game II when they welcomed Queensland into their backyard in Sydney.
The Blues boasted a new look this year with John Strange taking over from Kylie Hilder as coach and bringing in several fresh faces. And the refresh worked a treat in the opener as the Maroons were toppled 32-12 in front of a record-breaking crowd at Suncorp Stadium.
NSW had been in the same position last year though, when they won the opening game only to suffer back-to-back defeats against QLD. So, could they avoid a repeat heartbreak and wrap up the series at the first time of asking?

Who won Women’s State of Origin Game II?
NSW got off to a flying start in the opener a few weeks ago as they crossed the stripe three times in the first 20 minutes. But the home side certainly didn't enjoy a similar rapid start in Game II.
"The weather gods are Queenslanders!" Phil Gould exclaimed in commentary on Nine as torrential rain poured down and resulted in the Allianz turf being covered in puddles.
Queensland hooker Lauren Brown took advantage of the testing conditions with two measured kicks into the in-goal area on consecutive ocassions.
After drawing an error from Jessica Sergis on the first one, she then drew a mistake from Olivia Kernick on the second, as Tamika Upton swooped in.
The fullback, who had been kept relatively quiet in Game I, jumped on the loose ball and was controversially awarded the try by Bunker official Gerard Sutton after he ruled Kernick failed to ground the pill.
However, a handling error out of yardage moments later from Upton handed the Blues good field position for the first time and Jesse Southwell was patient when exerting pressure on the opposition.
The halfback gained a repeat set via a grubber before a fierce defensive set pinned the QLD side in. Moments later, Simaima Taufa charged her way over to level the scores.

Kernick atoned for her earlier error with the reigning Dally M Medal winner shaping to deliver a short ball before dummying and going herself.
The lock then brushed off a desperate attempted tackle from Upton, before she planted the ball down under the posts for a brilliant solo effort that handed the hosts the lead for the first time in the shadows of half time.
The hosts extended their lead early in the second stanza with Southwell shifting the ball left off a quick play-the-ball. Her pass found Isabelle Kelly, who calmly squared up the defence and fed Jayme Fressard to slide over in the corner.
Her fellow winger, Jaime Chapman, then got in on the act as she streaked into open space before she wrong-footed Upton to go over untouched and extend the lead.
"She's a gazelle," Gould chuckled. "As soon as she gets into open pasture, shut the gate."
The Blues closed out the contest with another try for Kernick as they cruised to a commanding 26-6 victory.
The win handed the Blues their first-ever triumph in a three-match Women's Origin series, with Strange's side now aiming for a whitewash in Newcastle.
