It looked for a while like Tyson Frizell might hang up the boots at the end of 2025, but the veteran back-rower is now poised to extend his stay in Newcastle.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the 33-year-old is expected to sign a one-year contract extension that will see him play into a 17th NRL season.

It’s a major boost for the Knights as they look to build a winning core around experience and consistency.

Still going strong in year 16

Frizell has been one of Newcastle’s most reliable figures through a turbulent few years, and while his days in the sky-blue of New South Wales may be over, his value to the Knights’ pack remains immense.

Much like Josh Papali’i at the Raiders, the Tongan international continues to defy age and expectations with his work rate and resilience.

Despite earlier reports suggesting Frizell might retire at season’s end, Sports Confidential now understands he will play on into 2026, a move that not only keeps experience in the dressing room but also sends a strong message about the club’s direction.

With the Knights aiming to build around players who bring both on-field presence and leadership, Frizell’s retention could prove pivotal in shaping what’s next for the Hunter club.
