Rabbitohs winger Alex Johnston continues to close in on the all-time tries record, and Bunnies officials are getting twitchy.
Following a double in last week’s win over the Titans, the 30-year-old has taken his career tally to 209—just three short of the record set by the legendary Ken Irvine way back in 1973—with an increasingly high chance the record will be tied, if not broken, this season.
South Sydney head office has used social media to implore fans to stay on their side of the fence when it happens.
Question is, will they listen?

“As Alex Johnston approaches NRL history, excitement is building across our passionate Members and supporters,” South Sydney posted on its official X account.
“When AJ breaks the record, we ask that fans celebrate from the stands. Entering the playing field carries significant penalties including fines up to $5,500 and stadium bans.”
The message to fans is clear—and no doubt legally driven, the club’s chairman is a solicitor after all—but given the truly historic circumstances of the occasion and the otherwise-horrific season the Rabbitohs have endured, what actually happens is anyone’s guess.
A La Perouse Panthers junior, Johhston has played his entire 240-game NRL career with the Rabbitohs and is currently in his 12th season wearing the famous Cardinal and Myrtle.
The Rabbitohs meet the Eels in Round 24 at Allianz Stadium, followed by matches against the Dragons and Roosters to end the 2025 season.
