Johnston inked an extension with the Rabbitohs just two weeks ago, which is expected to see him surpass Ken Irvine as the greatest try-scorer in South Sydney’s history, either later this season or early in 2026.
The veteran winger needs just six more tries to break Irvine’s long-standing record of 212 tries.
The Rabbitohs have reportedly included a special clause in Alex Johnston’s contract extension that could pave the way for him to become Papua New Guinea’s first NRL signing.
According to The Sydney Morning Herald, Johnston’s new two-year deal includes a provision that allows him to enter negotiations with PNG at any time, potentially making him the expansion side’s first official signing in the near future.

Typically, NRL contracting rules prevent players from negotiating with other clubs until November 1 in the final year of their contract.
However, South Sydney has made an exception by including a clause that allows Johnston to speak with PNG whenever he chooses.
This could provide a major advantage for PNG in securing their first marquee player.
“Alex has been a captain of [their] national team, has played 10 Tests and is revered in PNG,” Rabbitohs chief executive Blake Solly said.
“He will always have a home here at Souths, but if Alex and his family want to be part of the PNG team on its entry to the NRL competition, we understand, respect and support that.”
Still only 30 years old, Johnston has already played 239 games in a largely injury-free career, meaning he could remain in top form by the time PNG joins the NRL in 2028.
