A top-five Premier League clash has significant stakes for both sides as Liverpool host Tottenham at Anfield on Monday (AEST) in Jurgen Klopp's last match against a 'Big Five' EPL club as Reds manager.

Tottenham have more tangible competitive stakes on the line, as they fight for a Champions League place down the stretch of the season. Spurs sit fifth in the standings, seven points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa but also holding two games in hand.

With fifth in the table no longer likely to secure Champions League qualification in next year's reorganised European competition, Spurs will need to catch Aston Villa to grab a spot in next year's top tournament.

Liverpool have little competitively at stake, sitting third in the table and holding a surely insurmountable lead over Aston Villa, but they will want to finish strong for Klopp as he departs the club. April saw the entire season unravel on multiple fronts, with poor results being compounded by touchline squabbles, so a course correction over the final few matches would give the German boss the send-off he deserves after such a legendary tenure at Anfield.

Liverpool vs Tottenham prediction, odds

  • Moneyline lean: Liverpool (1.46)
  • Score prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Tottenham

In a game between two sides that have seemingly run out of steam, stick with the more talented squad. Spurs were exceedingly poor against Chelsea midweek, given chance after chance against a mentally weak club but unable to capitalise, only to concede a second and wither from there.

Spurs have not been phased much this season by facing a deficit, but it seems they're starting to lose their second-half magic. Liverpool are slumping to the finish line as well, but they have built-in motivation of playing for Jurgen Klopp, while Spurs have very little to push them towards a strong finish now that the top four is almost surely out of reach.

Liverpool vs Tottenham best bet

  • Pick: Liverpool to win the first half
  • Odds: 1.84 (Unibet)

Both these teams have been heavily skewed towards second half performances this season, but Spurs have made a true habit of putting themselves in a hole at the break. Tottenham have trailed at halftime of 11 matches this season, including five of their last seven.

Even worse, Tottenham haven't held a halftime lead since February 3 against Everton, a shocking run of 11 poor first-half performances. In that run, they've scored 20 goals, of which just four have come in the first half.

In that same span, Liverpool have just seven first-half goals of 26 total, but unlike Spurs, the Reds haven't been quite as battered through the first half on such a consistent basis, they've just missed a ton of chances. Liverpool have scored their seven first-half goals on 11.95 xG, which is fifth-best in the Premier League...whereas Spurs have registered just 7.09 first-half xG, fourth-worst in the EPL.
