Gold Coast will unleash mature-aged recruit Ben Jepson for his AFL debut on Sunday, completing a remarkable rise from local footy and classrooms to the top level.
The 25-year-old half-back earned his spot on the Suns’ list through the Supplemental Selection Period (SSP) over summer, impressing during pre-season training under Damien Hardwick.
Just last year, Jepson was working as a teacher while plying his trade at VFL level with Southport, following a strong stint with Coburg.
Now, after seasons of persistence and self-belief, he’s set to run out at Adelaide Oval in a crucial Round 20 clash against the Crows.

“He’s worked his backside off”
Hardwick had nothing but praise for the level-headed defender, who joins fellow first-year Suns Leo Lombard and Oscar Adams as debutants in 2025.
“These are the great stories of the AFL. Ben was teaching this time last year and has worked his backside off to get given an opportunity,” Hardwick said. “He’s certainly earned the right to debut. He’s an incredible person first and foremost, but the way he goes about his football, you can tell he just loves the game.”
“We’re looking forward to providing him the opportunity to represent our club in the AFL.”
Jepson’s debut adds to a busy selection week for the Suns, who are likely to regain vice-captain Sam Collins and could also recall Ned Moyle and Lombard. Touk Miller (hamstring) is the only confirmed out.
The final squad will be locked in an hour before the 4:40 pm (AEST) bounce on Sunday.
