Fremantle CEO Simon Garlick has criticised the AFL for the way the father/son selections currently take place.

Current father/son selections include talents such as Sam Darcy, Will Ashcroft and Nick Daicos at Western Bulldogs, Brisbane and Collingwood, respectively.

Darcy, Ashcroft and Daicos were all bid on by other teams but went to the team their father played for due to the selection rule.

Garlick said the rule goes against the point of a draft, which is to equalise bottom-placed teams with teams at the top of the ladder, but top of the table teams are benefiting from the rule too much.

“So from my perspective, I just think when you’ve got players the like of the Ashcrofts, Sam Darcy - they’re generational players and we’re all working towards trying to win flags by building great cultures, attracting and retaining talent, and doing things on an even playing field,” Garlick said on SEN’s Sportsday.

“It’s one that I don’t see as having a place in the contemporary game, albeit understanding it’s lovely from a historical perspective and the culture of the game. I get that.

“But it just doesn’t feel right to me.”

Garlick also added that the AFL are trying to fix Next Generation Academies (NGA), which are also helping top teams pick talent that bottom teams should be able to pick.

“I’m glad you raised it because the AFL are intending to make sure that if we are going to have the NGA, it’s done in a way that is reflective of what the purpose of concept is,” he explained.

“They need to tighten that up considerably, which I believe they’re going to do.”

The AFL has also faced calls from St Kilda to fix up academy picks and overhaul the draft.
