GMHBA stadium won’t see any more AFL footy in 2025, with it being confirmed that any home final Geelong play will have to be hosted at the MCG.

Currently sitting in second with both of their remaining fixtures at the SCG and MCG being against non-top-eight sides, the Cats are in prime position to host a home final at some point in September.

Many pundits have forecasted Geelong to potentially host a home final against an interstate club with a smaller fanbase, such as Gold Coast or GWS, raising discussion about where the game would be played.

But speaking on the Midweek Tackle, Fox Footy’s Jon Ralph put any speculation to rest, confirming the Cats will be forced into hosting any final at their secondary home, the MCG.

“No deal. Absolutely no deal,” Ralph said.

“There is no chance… the contract basically states that if a game has a capacity to be 60,000 in Melbourne, it has to be at the MCG.

“Geelong’s got 90,000 members, so whoever it’s against… it’s not happening.”

The Cats last played a final at Kardinia Park in 2013, a Qualifying Final against Fremantle in which they fell by 15 points.

The stadium had recently increased its capacity to over 40,000, thanks to a new grandstand at the northern end of the stadium.

Geelong play Sydney and Richmond in the run home to finals, where two wins would keep them in contention for top spot or, at minimum, secure them a home Qualifying Final should they finish top two.
