Kane Cornes has highlighted Tom Green as next in line to captain the GWS Giants, once current captain Toby Greene vacates the role.

Green landed at the Giants in the 2019 national draft, quickly climbing the ranks to join the club’s leadership group in 2023 - the same year Greene took the reigns as standalone captain of the club.

The Giants are on track to make the finals for a third straight year under the leadership of Greene, as Green plays a huge role in the success of the Giants, both in the present and beyond.

“At the age of 25 in January, I think it is perfect [timing] for him (Green) and Toby Greene who turns 32 at the end of the year,” Cornes said on the Agenda Setters on Tuesday night.

“Toby has been an inspirational captain and an All-Australian captain.

“But at that age [the priority should be] to be able to focus on his own game, his own body, and play for another four, five years without the burden of the captaincy.

“I think Tom is at the right age. He embraces the media, he’s a terrific ambassador for the club.”

Greene had previously co-captained the Giants in 2022 alongside Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly, before taking sole responsibility in 2023, where he’d immediately prove his leadership abilities by being named All-Australian captain that year.

Green has enjoyed a standout year as the engine for GWS’ midfield, leading the competition in both clearances and contested possessions.

Meanwhile, Greene has continued to age gracefully, currently one of five players in the league to average more than 15 disposals and 1.5 goals per game.

The Giants are a strong chance to play finals in 2025, winning their past fives games to sit eight points clear of the ninth-placed Western Bulldogs.
