With the MLB trade deadline less than 48 hours out, the Houston Astros' needs are becoming clear. While the team is exploring potential third base additions to replace the injured Isaac Paredes, the Astros also have another position they want at the deadline.
According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Astros "want a starting pitcher." Amid all of the injuries to the rotation, Houston's need for a starter isn't a surprise. While Passan didn't name any players, there are two targets worth mentioning as the deadline approaches.
The first is San Diego Padres starting pitcher Dylan Cease. Houston was linked to Cease by Ken Rosenthal and Chandler Rome of The Athletic as the team's "primary trade target" at the deadline.
It's a significant rumor, as the Astros, even though the team doesn't have a lot of high-leverage assets, are going after one of the top starting pitchers on the market.
Part of their interest in Cease stems from his prestige, even though he hasn't been incredible this season. He has a 4.79 ERA in 22 starts, but has 153 strikeouts, top five in baseball this season.

While the Astros might be targeting Cease at the deadline, his price tag is high, and he might be a tough player to land at the deadline, especially with the Padres looking for a return at the Major League level.
Instead, there are a few other names to keep in mind as the trade deadline nears. Arizona Diamondbacks starters Merrill Kelly and Zac Gallen are potential fits, with Kelly being the better of the two.
Miami Marlins starter Sandy Alcantara is another pitcher who'd be of interest, though his price tag is expected to be very high. But, he's another starter the Astros could consider to pair with Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown.
With the Astros' injuries and the uncertainty behind Brown and Valdez, Passan reports that Houston wants to land a starting pitcher at the trade deadline.
