He will be vying to win the title for a second successive year, however, he will have to fend off the challenges from reigning world champion Luke Littler, Van Gerwen, and Raymond van Barneveld who are also top contenders to win the competition.
Eight of the world's top women players will also be competing for the women's title on Sunday, July 27, with two-time defending champion Beau Greaves looking to defend her title.

When is the 2025 World Matchplay Darts?
The 2025 World Matchplay Darts takes place over nine days at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool, England, starting with the first round at 7:00 p.m. local time (BST) on Saturday, July 19. The first round will take up the next two days, with the second round of the tournament beginning from Tuesday, July 22 at 7:00 p.m. local time (BST).
From Thursday, July 24 at 8:00 p.m. local time (BST) the tournament will begin heading towards its business end with the quarterfinals. Saturday, July 26 will see the semifinals take place from 8:00 p.m. local time (BST) onwards. Finally this year's champion will be decided with the final taking place on Sunday, July 27 at 8:00 p.m. local time (BST) onwards

There's a healthy wedge of prize money on offer for the 32 competing players in the tournament across nine days.
The total fund remains the same from 2024 (£800,000), with the winner set to pocket around a fourth of this amount at £200,000.
