The success rate on the men's side was better, with seven of 13 making it through, including wildcard Arthur Frey defeating 20th seed Alexei Popyrin.

World No. 281 Jack Pinnington Jones won five straight games from 5-2 down in the third to beat Tomas Martin Etcheverry in straight sets. Overall, 10 British players making it out of round one was the joint-best result since 12 progressed in 1976.

Sonay Kartal vs. Anastasia PavlyuchenkovaLost: 7-6 (7-3) 6-4

Kartal's superb run came to an end as she lost to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets. A move into the world top 50 is assured after Wimbledon.

It left Norrie flying the flag and the 29-year-old had to hold his nerve after Nicolas Jarry forced a deciding set. Norrie pulled through in style, although he has the dubious reward of a quarterfinal against two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz.

MatchResult
Cameron Norrie vs. Carlos AlcarazLost: 6-2 6-3 6-3

It would have been a major shock had Norrie upset Alcaraz on Centre Court, and such a result looked unlikely as soon as the defending champion had reeled off the first set in 29 minutes.

Norrie battled well but was ultimately outclassed by the Spaniard.
