With the MLB Trade Deadline set for July 31st, the Texas Rangers find themselves at a critical turning point. Sitting near the .500 mark and struggling to string together consistent wins, their identity as either buyers or sellers remains unclear. Over the next few weeks, how they perform will determine whether they make a push for the postseason or look ahead to 2026.
If the Rangers Buy:
Should the Rangers heat up and stay within striking distance of a Wild Card spot, they could become aggressive buyers. Pitching remains the top priority. Merrill Kelly of the Arizona Diamondbacks is a short-term rental option who could bring veteran stability to a battered rotation. Other names linked to Texas include Zac Gallen, Tomoyuki Sugano, Zack Littell, and former Ranger Andrew Heaney. Each could help reinforce a starting staff that has dealt with injuries and inconsistent outings.
In the bullpen, Emmanuel Clase of the Guardians stands out as an elite closer. He’s led the American League in saves for three consecutive seasons and would instantly upgrade the back end of the bullpen. Additional targets, such as Reid Detmers (Angels) and Jake Bird (Rockies), could provide depth and fresh arms in high-leverage situations.
Offensively, Texas could look to boost their lineup with someone like Josh Naylor, who’s capable of producing at first base or designated hitter — both areas of concern this season.
If the Rangers Sell:
If the team falters and decides to sell, they still have attractive trade chips. Tyler Mahle, Patrick Corbin, and Jon Gray all have expiring contracts and could bring value to pitching-hungry contenders. Position players such as Adolis García, despite his All-Star resume, and Josh Jung, who has underperformed this year, might also be on the table depending on the market.
The next few weeks will define the Rangers’ direction. Whether they make a final playoff push or opt to reset for the future, their moves by July 31st could reshape the roster for years to come.
