Lionel Messi has sent records tumbling throughout his career and he could be in line for another incredible record before the end of 2023.

After opting for a summer move from Paris Saint-Germain to MLS side Inter Miami, Messi signed off in Paris with a Ligue 1 title, and the 43rd major trophy of his incredible career.

Messi's haul of silverware comes spread across successes for club and country with huge titles won at Barcelona and PSG alongside a Copa America and FIFA World Cup double for Argentina.

The switch to the USA offers Messi a chance to extend his career and potentially add to his bulging trophy cabinet in the coming years.

Most trophies in men's football history

Messi's record of trophies is an enormous achievement for the veteran forward, but his place as the most successful footballer of all time is challenged by his old Barcelona teammate Dani Alves.

The pair formed a deadly duo in Catalonia with Alves also winning titles with Bahia, Sevilla, PSG, Juventus and Sao Paulo and Brazil, and he is tied over the number of trophies won, with 43.

Alves' total has been disputed in relation to trophies won outside the top flight in Brazil and not playing in one of PSG's French Super Cup finals, but the man himself has confirmed the tally.

Can Lionel Messi break most trophies won record in 2023?

With Alves seeming to settle the debate over where he stands on the trophy tracker, Messi's position becomes clearer, as he looks to take the title.

Messi has enjoyed a superb start to life in Florida, despite Inter Miami's struggles in MLS action prior to his arrival.

The Argentina captain faces two cup semifinals before the end of August and success in either would see him edge out Alves at the top of the charts.

Inter Miami take on Philadelphia Union in the Leagues Cup semifinal on August 15, with a potential final on August 19, before taking on FC Cincinnati in the US Open Cup on August 23.
