Newcastle United’s battle for a new right winger hit a major transfer roadblock after the Magpies saw a £45m [$61m] offer for Nottingham Forest's Anthony Elanga swiftly rejected.

Forest, flush with new UEFA Conference League money, have made their stance clear on Elanga and the club are reportedly demanding around £60m [$81m].

Elanga, who joined Forest from Manchester United in 2023, has been a vital asset for the Tricky Trees and played a decisive role for Nuno Espirito Santo's team last season - with six goals and 11 assists in Premier League action - as Forest eventually secured a top-seven finish.

With three years left on his deal at the City Ground, Forest are under no pressure to sell the Swedish international, and Newcastle - despite having the financial power to do so - are hesitant to match the lofty asking price.

That pause in the negotiations has triggered a potential change in direction on Tyneside as Eddie Howe weighs up his options.

Newcastle identify Bundesliga star as alternative

On the back of the Elanga stand-off, Sky Germany are reporting Borussia Dortmund winger Karim Adeyemi has now emerged as a top target. The 23-year-old German international, who scored seven goals in 17 Bundesliga starts last season, has been flagged up to Newcastle scouts as a dynamic, multi-positional option.

According to FBref data, Adeyemi ranks in the top 5% for non-penalty league goals per 90 minutes [0.51] and in the top 10% for expected assisted goals [0.32].

Alongside Adeyemi, Newcastle are also keeping tabs on PSV’s Johan Bakayoko and West Ham United star Mohammed Kudus. Both of those deals would also require a significant investment from Howe with Kudus impressing during his time at the London Stadium.
