Thomas Muller has finally broken his silence on one of football’s long-running what-ifs: a move to Manchester United.

As the Bayern Munich legend prepares for life beyond the Bundesliga, he’s made it clear that Old Trafford will not be his next stop.

Muller, who will leave Bayern after the Club World Cup this summer, reflected on the idea of playing in the Premier League.

The 35-year-old admitted the thought of joining United had crossed his mind “many times” over the years. But when asked if the move still appealed now, he didn’t hold back.

“Now? No, no. I’m not the right guy for them and they are not the right club for me,” Muller told CBS Sports. “They won’t have fun and I won’t have fun so that’s not a match.”

After nearly two decades in Bayern’s first team and 33 major trophies, Muller’s resume is packed — but his future remains open.

A switch to Major League Soccer looks more likely, while United fans can only wonder what might have been if Louis van Gaal had sealed the deal back in 2015.

Why Thomas Muller said 'no' on Man Utd move?

Muller’s comments shine a light on the current state of Manchester United. Once one of Europe’s top destinations, United have struggled to find direction in recent seasons.

Muller’s “not a match” remark says more about the Red Devils than himself.

He didn’t rule out past interest, saying, “Yeah, I thought about it. There were some moments I thought it would be nice to experience it.”

But in 2025, things are different. United’s rebuild continues under new leadership, while Muller is looking for a project that feels right — and fun.

Muller also spoke on Liverpool's signing of Florian Wirtz, backing the young German to thrive: “In the end, the German players I met in my career who did the move to the Premier League always adjusted well.”
