Mason Mount reveals what Manchester United's target is for the upcoming season image

Mason Mount has clarified what would be a successful campaign for Manchester United in 2025/2026 after the team severely underperformed last season.

Ruben Amorim's side finished 15th in the Premier League and failed to deliver any silverware after losing the Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

The 1-0 loss to Spurs in Bilbao also meant United failed to cash in on a golden chance to secure Champions League football for the upcoming season. The Red Devils are therefore not going to be competing in any European competition in 2025/2026.

Playing no European football is unheard of for United, as next season's absence will mark just the second time it has happened in 35 years.

For Mount, fixing the absence of no European football must be a priority for him and his teammates in the year ahead.

Speaking to the media at United's pre-season tour stop in Chicago, the Englishman commented: "Europe is a massive, massive thing. The Champions League would be amazing for us and as a group we want to be playing in that competition."

He added: "But I'd say Europe. I think that's the focus."

What part could Mount play for United in 2025/2026?

Mount will be hoping to play a key role in United's push for a much higher league finish in the upcoming campaign.

The midfielder is under pressure to start performing more consistently in a red shirt and replicate the kind of form that convinced United to pay up to £60m for him two years ago.

Mount has scored just four goals for United since previous boss, Erik ten Hag, brought him to the club.

The United No.7 has also struggled with multiple injuries since departing Chelsea and may find it challenging to get many minutes on the pitch this upcoming season.

Furthermore, United's new £62.5m signing, Matheus Cunha typically operates in the same advanced midfield area as Mount and is set to be a key starter under Amorim.

With no European football at Old Trafford, players will have fewer games to impress Amorim.

However, like many players, Mount will get a chance to showcase himself on United's pre-season tour of the United States. Amorim's side will face West Ham United, Bournemouth and Everton as part of the Premier League Summer Series.

A final friendly will take place against Fiorentina at Old Trafford a week before United's Premier League campaign begins at home to Arsenal.
