Manchester United are reportedly closing in on a big-money move for Bryan Mbeumo, but they may already have to plan without him for a short part of the season.

As the transfer inches closer, the timing of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) could pose a real selection headache for Ruben Amorim.

The Brentford forward is one of Cameroon’s top stars and is expected to lead their line at AFCON 2025.

The tournament kicks off on December 21 and runs until January 18, which overlaps with the busy Premier League festive period. If Mbeumo makes the final squad, United could be without him for six matches during that stretch.

For a club looking to bounce back from their worst scoring season in decades, it’s a tough pill to swallow. Mbeumo, who netted 20 league goals last season, is being eyed as a key figure in Amorim’s rebuild.

The forward has also apparently made it clear he wants the move to Old Trafford, despite interest from Spurs.

Which Manchester United fixtures could Bryan Mbeumo miss?

United have already had one bid rejected, reportedly worth £45 million plus add-ons, with Brentford holding out for closer to £60 million. But it’s not just about the fee — the calendar may be just as important here.

If Cameroon make it past the group stage, Mbeumo could miss crucial matches against Aston Villa, Newcastle, Wolves, Leeds, Burnley, and even Manchester City. Talk about being booked for a red-eye flight just before the Manchester Derby.

Marc Brys’ side will play group games on December 24, 28, and 31. Knockout rounds begin in early January, meaning any deep run could see Mbeumo out for nearly a month.

And he’s not the only one — Andre Onana, Amad Diallo, and Noussair Mazraoui may also be unavailable.
