Virgil van Dijk believes 'room for another attacker' amid Liverpool's push for Isak image

Liverpool have been one of the most active teams in the transfer window this summer as they have invested almost £265 million ($369m) in transfers and are possibly not done yet.

The reigning Premier League champions have added players like Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, and Jeremie Frimpong to their already exceptional roster.

However, Liverpool's start to the 2025/26 campaign wasn't the best as they lost to Crystal Palace on penalties in the FA Community Shield clash at the Wembley stadium.

It was a rare bad outing for Liverpool stalwart Virgil van Dijk, who conceded a penalty to the Eagles which helped them equalize in the 17th minute of the game when Jean-Philippe Mateta stepped up.

After the game, the experienced defender felt that the Merseyside outfit could sign another attacker to replace the ones that have left the club.

"Well, we just lost Darwin [Nunez], he went to Saudi and we lost Lucho [Luis Diaz], obviously he went to Bayern," Van Dijk told talkSPORT.

"I think there's always room for an attacker in order to strengthen us so let's see what the window brings in terms of the balance of the team."

The Reds are desperately looking to sign Alexander Isak and also saw their bid worth £110m plus add-ons get rejected by the Magpies.

Since then, Newcastle United target Benjamin Sesko has moved to Manchester United and therefore the Magpies may not allow Isak to leave this summer without securing a proper replacement.

What did Liverpool boss Arne Slot say about transfer plans?

While Van Dijk wants the Reds to sign another attacker, Liverpool boss Arne Slot has a very different opinion to his compatriot.

Slot has insisted that he has enough options and is happy with the roster, he said, "I think we have more than enough options to be good enough to win again."

"This is where I focus on myself. With the players we have we should be able to win, to score. That's actually what we did as well. We scored twice and last season we only scored one against [Crystal Palace], away and at home.

“We could only score one against them. So, my last concern at the moment is our offensive quality.”

It remains to be seen if Liverpool manage to secure another attacker before the summer transfer window closes. A push for Isak looks rather complicated considering Newcastle's lack of alternatives.
