Jack Wilshere is in advanced talks with Arsenal to return as U21's head coach, sources have told Sporting News.

The Gunners' former Under-18s head coach is among those under consideration for the role, having maintained close ties with figures at London Colney despite leaving the club in late 2024.

The 33-year-old joined Norwich City’s first-team coaching staff under Johannes Hoff Thorup in October but departed earlier this summer after a brief interim spell in charge.

Wilshere, who is known to have aspirations of becoming a Premier League manager, is highly regarded at Arsenal for his work with the U18s, notably guiding the side to the FA Youth Cup final in 2023.

While talks are ongoing, sources stress that no agreement has been finalised and the club are continuing to assess their options.

The club is understood to be looking for a coach who not only understands the academy’s development model but can also instil a style of play aligned with the first team’s identity. Wilshere remains a strong contender due to his deep connection with the club, coaching experience and familiarity with the current crop of young talent.

Mikel Arteta has placed increasing emphasis on youth progression in recent years, with the likes of Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly already breaking into the first team under the Spaniard.

The Under-21s play a crucial role in that transition, and the club are determined to appoint a coach capable of nurturing the next generation while maintaining tactical continuity with the senior side.

While Wilshere is viewed as a strong candidate, no deal has been finalised and the club are continuing to assess all available options.

An announcement is expected ahead of the new Premier League 2 season as Arsenal look to ensure stability within their academy structure.
