As Michael van Gerwen prepares to face rising star Josh Rock in a highly anticipated second-round clash at the Betfred World Matchplay tonight, the Dutch darts icon has offered a philosophical perspective on the relentless nature of the sport and his own journey.
Van Gerwen, a three-time World Matchplay champion, advanced to the second round after a hard-fought 10-6 victory over Raymond van Barneveld on Monday, a match in which he admitted to struggling for fluency.
Despite his decorated past and formidable reputation, Van Gerwen acknowledges that sustained success requires constant effort and adaptation.
"Darts doesn’t stop for anyone, not for me, not for Phil Taylor, not anyone,” conceded Van Gerwen, speaking to the PDC.
The 'Mighty Mike' has openly discussed his recent form, which has been somewhat mixed in 2025 following a World Championship final appearance at the start of the year.

He admits the frustration that comes with knowing his capabilities when performances aren't consistently at their peak.
"Sometimes I have to be patient with myself, but of course that’s difficult, because I know what I’m capable of," he stated.
“It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. You need to win more games at the highest level, and then things will develop for myself. I know that.
“It feels like you have to start from scratch, but I can handle it. I love what I do, I love performing.”
The clash promises to be a fascinating battle between an established legend adapting to a new phase of his career and one of the sport's most exciting young talents.
