Nathan Lyon has joined cricket royalty after claiming his 500th wicket during Australia's opening Test against Pakistan in Perth.

The right-arm off-spinner has now become just the third Australian player to reach the milestone, and the eighth in world cricket.

Australia vs. Pakistan: Nathan Lyon joins '500 club' 

Lyon brought up his 500th Test wicket via a successful LBW review against Pakistan's Faheem Ashraf.

He then bowled Aamer Jamal moments later to help Australia secure a dominant victory on Day 4.

"It's something I'm pretty proud about," Lyon said post-match.

"For a young kid growing up in the country New South Wales, 500 wickets is a bloody long way away ... a lot of hard work but something I'm very proud about."

Who has the most Test wickets for Australia?

There is no prize for guessing the Australian cricketer with the most Test wickets – it's Shane Warne.

The leg spinner bagged 708 dismissals in 145 matches for the national team.
