Nobody has ever accused Billy Butler of being swift of foot.
In fact, the Royals' designated hitter often has the word "lumbering" spoken in the same sentence when people talk about his "speed' on the bases. That won't change after what happened Thursday night.
In a game against the Blue Jays, Butler laced what should have been a one-hop single into right field. But Toronto outfielder Jose Bautista, knowing Butler's reputation, charged and came up firing to first base.
The ball beat Butler to the bag, and he went back to the dugout thanks to the rare 9-3 putout.
Making matters worse for Kansas City, this happened with one out in the ninth inning and the Royals trailing by just one run. Butler would have represented the potential tying run. Luckily for him, the Royals did tie the game in the ninth, and then took the lead with a pair of runs in the 10th (though Butler grounded into a fielder's choice to end that inning) and held on for the win.
