Coco Gauff continued her quest for a maiden French Open title with a battling, error-strewn win over fellow American Madison Keys.
Australian Open champion Keys claimed the first set on a tie-break before Gauff responded to win 6-7 (6-8) 6-4 6-1.
The scoreline only told a portion of the story, especially over the course of the opening two sets where two of the best players in the world appeared to be grappling more with themselves than one another.
But Gauff settled into a smooth rhythm during the decider and ran away with it, breaking Keys three times to book a semifinal against either teenage sixth seed Mirra Andreeva or home hope Lois Boisson.
Madison Keys vs. Coco Gauff final score
Set | 1 | 2 | 3 |
---|---|---|---|
Madison Keys (7) | 7 (8) | 4 | 1 |
Coco Gauff (2) | 6 (6) | 6 | 6 |
Under a closed roof on Court Philippe-Chatrier, Keys brought her typically aggressive approach on the forehand to bear during the opener and had two points for 5-1.
Gauff scrambled to get a break back and won the next four games to take control of the set. Keys was able to hang on and make it to the tie-break. The 21-year-old saved a first set point with an immaculate backhand slice.
The fact she immediately coughed up another with a double fault exemplified the struggles of both players and Keys was ahead when Gauff went wide.
There was a role reversal in set two as Gauff collapsed from 4-1 ahead to 4-4. From appearing to be in disarray, Gauff raced to 0-30 and claimed a crucial break with a deep cross-court forehand.
The 2023 US Open champion held to set up the decider and Gauff's game became smoother from that point, something that caused Keys to unravel as she continued to play in the red and rack up unforced errors.
A beautiful whipped cross-court backhand put Gauff two breaks up and she did not look back from there. None of the ugly tennis that preceded it mattered much anymore.
Coco Gauff is BACK in the final four! 🤩

Madison Keys vs. Coco Gauff live updates, highlights from Roland-Garros 2025 French Open women's tennis singles
Madison Keys* 6-6 (8-6) 4-6 1-6 Coco Gauff - COCO GAUFF IS INTO THE FRENCH OPEN SEMIFINALS!
Gauff is hanging in the rallies now and that's enough to do for a ragged Keys most of the time. It's 0-30. The end is nigh. Gauff chops an outrageous forehand from the back of the court, Keys adjusts to get it back over but is passed. Three match points. They trade from the back of the court before Keys shanks a forehand. A fitting ending in many ways. Gauff found her rhythm in that third set decisively. The first two were weirdly compelling as the two players appeared to be battling more with themselves than one another. Gauff will know she must play much better to go all the way in Paris, but she'll be elated to have got out of that one.
Madison Keys 6-6 (8-6) 4-6 1-5 Coco Gauff*
Gauff celebrates taking control of the match with a double fault. Tremendous stuff. Keys goes wide and then nets. 30-15. Keys puts together a fabulous point strung together by typically venomous forehands to level up. Gauff responds with finesse to earn game point. She finds a brutal serve that Keys can't return. Coco a game away from the French Open semifinals.
Madison Keys* 6-6 (8-6) 4-6 1-4 Coco Gauff
Ah, a point against the serve from the Keys serve. Hello, old friend. She regroups but another forehand miss makes it 30-30. There's a fine serve but a stunning backhand across court leaves Keys groping by the net and Gauff has break point. Back comes Keys, crunching a forehand for deuce. Gauff steps in behind a wonderful forehand of her own for another break point. Good Keys serve, but she brings Gauff's backhand into play. Whipped across court and it dies off the line! Gauff holds up a hand of apology to her compatriot but is two breaks up in the decider. Surely she can't let it slip from here?
Madison Keys 6-6 (8-6) 4-6 1-3 Coco Gauff*
Has this settled into a normal, competent game of elite tennis? Gauff gets to 30-0 witht he minimum of fuss, forces Keys back and has three game points. Panther-like stuff at the net from the world No. 2 and it's another hold to love.
Madison Keys* 6-6 (8-6) 4-6 1-2 Coco Gauff
Keys straining every sinue, running around the backhand and winning points. She scraps to 40-0. This is a timely location of some consistency. Gauff into the net and we have back-to-back love holds, which I don't think anyone expected.
Madison Keys 6-6 (8-6) 4-6 0-2 Coco Gauff*
I know you can't trust either player further than they can toss a ball in this match but Gauff has dialled her game in, is moving nicely and races to 40-0. Keys must feel like the court is shrinking as she's off target again. 2-0 Gauff and new balls.
Madison Keys* 6-6 (8-6) 4-6 0-1 Coco Gauff
An absolutely thrilling point to kick off the third set. Longest rally of the match, both players in it, Gauff deft at the net but Keys passes her. Can that light the touchpaper? Not so much. Unforced forehand error and a double and Gauff is ahead. Keys gets back to 30-30 before her feast-or-famine forehand comes good. Game point... wildly long. There's a meaty serve before Gauff is forced into the net. Advantage Keys, who goes long. From the next rally, Keys goes into the net with the backhand. Gauff has a break point from being nothing other than solid in this game. A fault, a big kick second serve. That's good from Keys, who then blams another long to drop serve.
Madison Keys 6-6 (8-6) 4-6 Coco Gauff* - COCO GAUFF WINS THE SECOND SET!
A controlled first point from Gauff when she needs it. Then a fault and an excellent Keys return to level it up. Now Gauff is long, and a fault and a let. Second serve at 15-30... Keys goes long with a driving backhand return. She repeats the trick and Gauff has set point. This Keys return is just on the line but Gauff holds her nerve. We're heading to a decider.
Madison Keys* 6-6 (8-6) 4-5 Coco Gauff
Oh, hello! Gauff finds a stunning backhand from way off the court to beat Keys at the net. Now it's 0-30. This match is unhinged. Keys digs out a white-hot forehand to get on the board. Backhand into the net and here are two break points. Keys sees off the first one, a fault on the second though... Gauff gets in a couple of slices before hammering a cross-court forehand that lands right on the corner. Coco will serve for the set. Who know what that even means in this one?!
Madison Keys 6-6 (8-6) 4-4 Coco Gauff*
First serve from Gauff is way long. She doesn't need that. Keys gets ahead. She could be closing in on a fairly remarkable victory as Gauff goes long again. The next serve almost reaches Keys on the half volley. Next Gauff can't make the volley at the net work. Two break poins for Keys! And a second serve... Keys crunches a forehand into the net. Another rank bit of tennis. This forehand on the second serve is better, Gauff scrambling and Keys puts it away. We're all square. Gauff looks to be in disarray but who knows what happens from here.
*Madison Keys 6-6 (8-6) 3-4 Coco Gauff
Keys, aggressive as always, as they trade points at the start of the game. Second serve but Gauff is ragged in the rally and into the net. There she goes again. 40-15. "So many unforced errors," Gauff mutters. You're telling me! And a forehand into the net gives Keys the game. Gauff remains up a break but she looked like a player at risk of falling apart just then.
Madison Keys 6-6 (8-6) 2-4 Coco Gauff*
Just when you think the momentum is comfortably heading in one direction in this match.... Gauff goes long and it's 0-30. Now she plonks a forehand into the tramlines and Keys has two break-back points! The first two are saved before Gauff's nineth double faults gives back one of the breaks! She understandably furious with herself.
*Madison Keys 6-6 (8-6) 1-4 Coco Gauff
Lovely stroke across court from Gauff to get to 15-15. Then Keys reliably misses. And again. Two break points for Gauff. First serve pings off the net tape and out. The second is in the slot and Gauff dispatches a the return forehand winner to go two breaks up.
Madison Keys 6-6 (8-6) 1-3 Coco Gauff*
Gauff into the net and whips one past Keys. She's determined to drive this advantage home and level the match. But there's a double fault! Honestly, both of these players must be driving themselves crazy at this point. Gauff hangs in the rally and Keys obliges by going long. 40-15. A nice volley on the backhand side pulls it back for Keys before Gauff net the backhand for deuce. Oooooffff, a screaming service return winner cross-court! Keys has a break point from 15-40. Then she goes long before, does so again on a service return. Another unreturnable means Gauff has gone from breakpoint down to game in the blink of an eye.
Madison Keys* 6-6 (8-6) 1-2 Coco Gauff
Problems for Keys, who is again ragged and nets to make it 15-40. Two break points for Gauff! She climbs into a forehand and thumps it into the net. That's a poor shot. Keys duly produces a worse one to go long and, amid suffocating tension that is wrecking both players to a greater or lesser extent, Gauff is a break up in the second set.
Madison Keys 6-6 (8-6) 1-1 Coco Gauff*
Gauff is cranky with herself as she lets this one slip to 15-15. She focuses some of the frustration into a blistering serve before the Keys raquet caughts up another error for 40-15. Then Gauff sends another forehjand into the floor before one into the net. Deuce. Keys gets to look at a second serve but can't take advantage of a fairly tame effort. Then she puts another forehand into the net - a couple of points from Keys that are hard to comprehend when you think about how she's turned up for some of the biggest ones.
Madison Keys* 6-6 (8-6) 1-0 Coco Gauff
Keys gets us underway in set two after a first that she both threw away and then stole back. She's long after a second serve to slip to 15-30. And on we go as we were... two break points for Gauff. Again, Keys steps up to the plate on a big point with a huge serve and forehand. Another great serve before Gauff nets for deuce. Coco digs out a fabulous forehand from deep, Keys nets and its a break point that she sees off with a fizzing forehand winner. Other side of the coin again as Keys goes from another big forehand cross-court and sends it wide. Second break point, but Keys kicks a beauty out wide and there's little Gauff can do. The next serve is into the net, Gauff thinks Keys has gone wide before she drills another forehand winner to take the advantage. The umpire inspects and on we go.
Game point for Keys, she plays it brilliantly before slapping a backhand wide. That's a wretched miss! Keys is just playing in the red and seeing what happens. When she needs it the serve holds up, Gauff nets a return and she gets out of the game.
Madison Keys 6-6 (8-6) Coco Gauff - TIE-BREAK: MADISON KEYS WINS THE FIRST SET!
Keys get the first mini-break, although it's debatable how much those are worth after set like that. Excellent defense from Gauff, who tenaciously hangs in the point before Keys nets. "COME ON!" yells Coco. Brilliant from Gauff at the net but Keys screams one past her! 2-1 to the Aussie Open champ, who duly nets in the next rally as Gauff's forehand stands up to scrutiny. Now Keys goes wildly long. 3-2 Gauff.
Gauff's ploy of making Keys play the extra shot proving to be vital as the errors continue to mount up. 4-2. Big serve and a forehand winner from Keys, though. A Gauff double levels up the breaker. A 19th forehand error of the set from Keys puts her compatriot ahead once more. Again, Keys digs deep and forces Gauff to drag wide across court. 5-5. Now Gauff goes long under pressure and Keys has a set point. Oh, behave yourself! Gauff gets a good first serve in and then slices a backhand that just dies completely. Incredible shot, only for Gauff to throw in a double after the change of ends for another set point! On the Keys serve too, and Gauff is wide!
Madison Keys* 6-6 Coco Gauff
Good defense from Keys to win the first point of the game, something that hasn't always been a given. But we've seen plenty of that - going long for another unforced error. Gauff gets to 15-30 and Keys hits the the line with a crashing forehand to pull level. Brilliant stuff but she's playing on the edge. A solid serve get Madison to game point. A thunderous rally, with Keys takes with a forehand hammered into the corner, forcing Gauff to go long. Tie-break time!
Madison Keys 5-6 Coco Gauff*
Gauff races into a 30-0 lead, keen to check any idea of Keys getting back into the ascendancy. Keys scruffily into the net and then goes long. That's hold to love in quicktime and a very hand time to do it. Keys must hold to force the tie-break.
Madison Keys* 5-5 Coco Gauff
Gauff goes just long with an audacious lob. Welcome respite for Keys but also an uneasy indication that confidence is now coursing through her opponent. That forehand is never going to be completely watertight, though. 30-0. Similarly, Keys chucks another nervy backhand into the net. Gauff gets control over a second-serve rally, pushes Keys deep and we're back to 30-30. Coco somehow two points from the set. She's moving Keys around astutely before going wildly long with a forehand. If she could just stop doing that... Nevertheless, Keys thunders one wide for deuce. Nice return from Gauff, Keys nets set point. Keys sees it off witha brilliant serve kicking out wide and hammers home the return.
Now a miss-hit from Gauff as the game ticks past five minutes. Two huge serves from Keys to pull this around for advantage and she finishes the job. That's a colossal hold.
Madison Keys 4-5 Coco Gauff*
Keys had two points for 5-1 and it now feels like the set is slipping away from her as Gauff races to 30-0. There's a double fault, though. The sight of two elite players struggling with themselves so badly is weirdly compelling. There's another wretched error as Gauff leaves one in mid-court for Keys, who dumps a forehand into the net. Gauff gets a first serve to sing, then lands a forehand right on the line. Keys stays into the point before Gauff drills across court for her fourth game in a row.
Madison Keys* 4-4 Coco Gauff
Keys still a break up but the whole feel has changed over those past two games, something a double fault does little to shift. Gauff appears to have dialled in her forehand and it's 0-30. She whips a lovely return a across court to take control of the next point but that's an emphatic winner from Keys! She can't build on it and Gauff has two points to get back on serve, whatever that means in this match. Keys wide to the forehand side. Second serve.. into the net and we're all square!
Madison Keys 4-3 Coco Gauff*
Gauff with a rare first point won on her own serve, then another fault and Keys pulls it level. A couple more points traded for 30-30 and then another Gauff fault. She constructs the next point beautifully under pressure, pushing a sliding Keys back for game point. A first serve in and Keys nets! 4-3. Game on.
Madison Keys* 4-2 Coco Gauff
Lovely variety of slices from both players but Gauff's forehand malfunctions again, going way long. She has 11 unforced errors to two winners so far after that point. Yikes. Oofff, there's a third winner to get into the game at 30-15, though. A second serve to climb into but Gauff goes wide. Two game points for Keys, but a fault and then a dodgy ball toss and Gauff puts a forehand past her before persuading her compatriot to net. Deuce. Kick second serve and Keys goes long. Break back point for Gauff. And another Keys fault. Gauff is after the second aggressively, the forehand working better. Some nice slices and Gauff wraps up the game with a smash! Is that a turning point???
Madison Keys 4-1 Coco Gauff*
Gauff badly needs a hold of serve here. A double fault to go 0-30 down not an optimal way to go about that task. Another serve long. Big kick on the second but a forehand into the net and here are three break points for Keys... a third double fault from Gauff and a third service game dropped! She's gifting this first set away.
Madison Keys* 3-1 Coco Gauff
Off we go again with a Coco winner. Does anyone want to hold serve? Keys into the net for 15-15 before Gauff goes fractionally long with a forehand return. Gauff moves her opponent around really nicely here, though, before dispatching a drop shot. 30-30. The second seed admonishes herself for drilling another forehand low into the net and blow me down there's a hold of serve!
Madison Keys 2-1 Coco Gauff*
Keys gets ahead in the game, but a backhand into the net makes it 15-15. Gauff really needs to start landing some first serves. The latest forehand battle is once again on Keys' terms and Gauff sends the backhand long. The Australian Open champion thumps long there, though. 30-30. Another unforced forehand error gives Gauff game point, but there's the other side of the coin as Keys creams a beauty of a winner down the line. Deuce and a service return winner for break point. Oh, and that's ragged from Gauff, who scampers in but nets a backhand. Three games, three breaks of serve!
Madison Keys* 1-1 Coco Gauff
Keys gets underway with a double fault and now Gauff has an opening to break back at 15-30. Good defense from Gauff, who persuades Keys to go long. Two break points and this once goes the same was a Gauff stays in the rally and Keys is off target. We're back on serve!
Madison Keys 1-0 Coco Gauff*
A nice long rally to get both players into their groove, which is authoritatively controlled by Gauff, but she nets a forehand for 15-15. Another early sign that the forehand differential might be crucial as Keys nails a winner. Now two break points for Keys and Gauff nets her first serve. She gets the second to kick up and drives Keys back to scuff into the net. Gauff needs to defend the second break point with another second serve because she's way wide. Keys tests out her foe's forehand again and it's into the net! A break straight out of the traps for Keys!
11:10 a.m. CET/ 5:10 a.m ET: We're ready to go! Coco to serve first.
10:50 a.m. CET/ 4:50 a.m ET: The players will be out on court momentarily and it's a grey morning in Paris. Court Philippe-Chatrier does have roof the roof closed in case the rain arrives. Indoor conditions could likely favour Keys and her aggressive forehand game.
10:50 a.m. CET/ 4:50 a.m ET: The first women's singles semifinal is already set, with top seed Aryna Sabalenka meeting four-time winner and defending champion Iga Swiatek in a blockbuster clash. The winner of Keys vs. Gauff will face either Mirra Andreeva or home hope Lois Boisson, the world 361 who has enjoyed an incredible run at Roland-Garros.
10:30 a.m. CET/ 4:30 a.m ET: Frances Tiafoe recently described Gauff as "Little Miss Mature". Instead of decrying the lamest nickname ever given to anyone, Coco was happy to take the compliment.
Most people do say I'm mature. I feel like playing tennis forces you to grow up faster. When I was in school, I would always be the first one to class. I remember getting on the yellow for the behaviour chart once, and that was like the worst day of my life. I'm definitely someone that prides myself on being a good example.
10:10 a.m. CET/ 4:10 a.m ET: The match against Kenin is the only time Keys has dropped a set at Roland-Garros this year but it almost got much worse for her than that as she was forced to save three match points. Will having to go to the well in that manner serve her well against Gauff today?
9:50 a.m. CET/ 3:50 a.m ET: This really is an intriguing match-up. Gauff has been in brilliant form over the past week and a half. The 21-year-old is yet to drop a set and demolished 20th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-0, 7-5 in the Round of 16. This is Keys' third consecutive showdown with a fellow American, having beaten Hailey Baptiste last time out after overcoming Sofia Kenin in three sets in the third round. Australian Open champion Keys holds a 3-2 head-to-head advantage over Gauff, who is nine years her junior, and won their only previous meeting on clay in Madrid last year.
9:30 a.m. CET/ 3:30 a.m ET: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News' live coverage of the all-American French Open quarterfinal between Madison Keys and Coco Gauff at Roland-Garos. Keys and Gauff are starting bright and breezy on Wednesday, first on Court Philippe-Chatrier. A tip of the hat to you if you're joining us Stateside at this time.
