2021 NBA Draft: Instant analysis of the lottery
1. Detroit Pistons, Cade Cunningham, Oklahoma State
Position: Guard
Age: 19
The Detroit Pistons get their franchise cornerstone in Cunningham, one of the best playmakers in the class. His combination of size, scoring and passing give them an elite talent to build around.
2. Jalen Green, Houston Rockets, G League Ignite
Position : Guard
Age : 19
The Rockets rebuild gets a huge jolt with the addition of Jalen Green, giving them a primary scorer who they can run their offence through. Green is a fluid scorer and is set to get plenty of buckets at the NBA level.
3. Evan Mobley, Cleveland Cavaliers, USC
Position: Center
Age: 19
The Cavaliers added a talented big man to their young core of perimeter players. Mobley possesses an elite two-way skill set, with his polished offensive game giving them scorer in the paint.
The Cavs were one of the worst defensive teams in the league last season and Mobley's combination of rim protection, defensive IQ athleticism will give them a big boost on that side of the floor.
4. Scottie Barnes, Toronto Raptors, Florida State
Position: Forward
Age: 19
Branes is an excellent defender operating as a point guard in a forward's body. He's an interesting fit in Toronto with Kyle Lowry's impending free agency, but certainly one for the future for Toronto.
5. Jalen Suggs, Orlando Magic, Gonzaga
Position: Guard
Age: 19
Suggs gives the Magic a playmaker who can push the pace and score in transition. He's an interesting fit for the Magic given their depth of guards in Markelle Fultz, Cole Anthony and R.J. Hampton.
6. Josh Giddey, Oklahoma City Thunder, Adelaide 36ers
Position : Guard
Age: 18
NBA.com's draft expert Kyle Irving says: Giddey is a brilliant playmaker who can create for his teammates in a variety of ways. He's a pick-and-roll maestro with the ability to make quick and smart decisions on tricky passes in tight windows. His smooth ball-handling skills pairs nicely with this aspect of his game.
7. Jonathan Kuminga, Golden State Warriors, G League Ignite
Position: Wing
Age: 18
Kuminga is explosive in the open court. He'll be a ready-made NBA-level defender and lands in a nice spot in Golden State where he can learn from Draymond Green.
8. Franz Wagner, Orlando Magic, Michigan
Position: Wing
Age: 19
Wagner joins his brother Mo with the Orlando Magic. A long-armed versatile defender, that's where his real value is right now. He needs to improve his shooting, but is a great cutter and should help the Magic's rebuild.
9. Davion Mitchell, Sacramento Kings, Baylor
Position: Guard
Age: 22
One of the best defensive players in college basketball last year. He was the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year and helped Baylor win the National Championship last season. Should help the Kings with their on-ball defending playing alongside De'Aaron Fox and Tyrese Haliburton.
10. Ziaire Williams, Memphis Grizzlies (via New Orleans Pelicans), Stanford
Position: Wing
Age: 19
He didn't have the type of production expected in college and shot the ball poorly, but he has the tools to become a better shooter in the pros and performer with NBA spacing. Coming out of high school he was an expected lottery pick, but a surprising pick to some at No. 10.
11. James Bouknight, Charlotte Hornets, UConn
Position: Guard
Age: 20
When you play with LaMelo Ball, you need shooting and Bouknight can do that. Bouknight can score at all three levels which Charlotte could use. The Hornets have to be happy the guard lasted this long in the draft.
12. Josh Primo, San Antonio Spurs, Alabama
Position: Wing
Age: 18
The Canadian is the youngest player in the draft and lands in the lottery after just one season in college basketball. Primo has tremendous potential, he has size and versatility on both ends of the floor. He may have a little way to go to reach his ceiling but he's with an organization that will surely maximize his potential.
13. Chris Duarte, Indiana Pacers, Oregon
Position: Wing
Age: 24
Duarte was first-team All-Pac 12 and All-Defence in the Pac 12 this past season with the Oregon Ducks. Duarte is the oldest player in the draft. A two-way wing with size — has a very mature game. His ceiling might not be as high as others in the draft, but he'll be ready to contribute to the Pacers day one.
14. Moses Moody, Golden State, Arkansas
Position: Guard
Age: 19
The second of their two lottery picks for the Golden State Warriors, Moody will help the Warriors with his shooting and his length. The Warriors should be happy he fell this late in the draft.
