What followed? Kohli reportedly blocked the singer on Instagram. Let’s break down what actually happened - and what didn’t.

How did Virat Kohli’s accidental ‘like’ create a frenzy?

It all started on April 30, when a post of Avneet Kaur in a green top and skirt was shared on Instagram. Among the flurry of likes was one from Kohli, who has rarely interacted publicly with non-cricket accounts.

Responding to the unexpected attention, Kohli issued a clarification through his Instagram stories:

“I’d like to clarify that while clearing my feed, it appears the algorithm may have mistakenly registered an interaction. There was absolutely no intent behind it. I request that no unnecessary assumptions be made. Thank you for your understanding,” posted Kohli on Instagram.

Why did Rahul Vaidya’s joke lead to a block by Virat Kohli?

Singer Rahul Vaidya jumped in with a satirical take. He mimicked Kohli’s explanation. In one video, he joked:

"I just want to say that from now on, it’s possible the algorithm might end up liking a bunch of photos I didn’t actually like… So, to any girl out there - please don’t do PR around it. It’s not my fault, it’s Instagram’s mistake, okay?" said Vaidya.

He later followed up with another video where he claimed Kohli had blocked him:

"So guys, Virat Kohli has blocked me... I guess it must have been the Instagram algorithm telling Virat, ‘Let me do one thing - I’ll block Rahul Vaidya on your behalf,’" he said.

While it’s unclear whether Kohli’s action was serious or automated, the moment became an instant talking point, with fans from both camps reacting strongly online.
