Kagiso Rabada's sudden exit from the Indian Premier League 2025 season earlier this month raised eyebrows -- with Gujarat Titans citing a "significant personal matter" as the reason behind his departure.

However, a report from ESPNcricinfo has now revealed that the South African pacer is serving a provisional suspension for testing positive for the use of a recreational drug. The incident traces back to the SA20 tournament held earlier this year.

Though there were not any much details when he left the IPL on April 3 -- it is now been confirmed that the decision stemmed from a positive drug test conducted during his stint with MI Cape Town in the SA20. The fast bowler hasn’t featured in a match since March 29.

Kagiso Rabada issues a public apology

In a statement shared via the South African Cricketers’ Association, Rabada took responsibility for his actions and expressed remorse.

“As has been reported, I recently returned to South Africa from participating in the IPL for personal reasons. This was due to my returning an adverse analytical finding for the use of a recreational drug. I am deeply sorry to all those that I have let down. I will never take the privilege of playing cricket for granted... I am serving a provisional suspension and I am looking forward to returning to the game I love playing,” said Rabada.

He added:

"I couldn't have gone through this alone. I'd like to thank my agent, CSA, and Gujarat Titans for their support. I'd also like to thank SACA and my legal team for their guidance and counsel. Most importantly I'd like to thank my friends and family for their understanding and love. Moving forward, this moment will not define me. I will keep doing what I have always done, continuously working hard and playing with passion and devotion to my craft."

While the duration of Rabada’s suspension hasn’t been disclosed, ESPNcricinfo reports that his return to competitive cricket is likely soon. He has already travelled back to India.

This suggests that the Gujarat Titans could have him available for the final stages of IPL 2025. His case appears to mirror other recent instances -- including that of Doug Bracewell -- who received a reduced ban after undergoing treatment.

Sources close to Cricket South Africa are confident Rabada won’t miss any major tournaments, including the World Test Championship final in June. The South African Institute for Drug-Free Sport is expected to release a formal statement next week.
