The incident happened on the first ball of the 3rd over. On Deepak Chahar's length delivery, which was drifting down the leg side, Kishan attempted to flick the ball, but he apparently failed to connect with the bat and was carried to the wicketkeeper, Ryan Rickleton.

The bowler and wicketkeeper did not appeal while Hardik Pandya looked in two-minds as Kishan started to walk off. The umpire, Vinod Seshan, who was initially ruling it as a wide looked confused to see Kishan walking away and then changed his decision to out.
A DRS check later confirmed that the ball did not strike Kishan's bat, as questions were raised whether the SRH star had a brain fade moment.
