Ravichandran Ashwin's time with Chennai Super Kings may be nearing its end. According to a report by Cricbuzz, the veteran spinner is likely to move on from the franchise ahead of the 2026 IPL season.

While no official announcement has been made, multiple signs suggest a mutual decision could soon be finalised between Ashwin and CSK - ending what was a homecoming just a season ago.

R Ashwin's future with CSK uncertain

Ashwin returned to CSK in 2025 after nearly a decade away - reuniting with the franchise where he made his IPL debut in 2009. However, his second stint may prove to be short-lived.

Cricbuzz reports that Ashwin has informed the franchise of his intention to part ways, although the reasons behind the move remain unclear. What's fueling further speculation is a series of meetings in Chennai this week involving senior CSK figures - including MS Dhoni and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

While details of the discussions have not been made public, they are believed to be related to squad planning for the next season.

Ashwin is also expected to step away from his position as Director of Operations at the CSK Academy which he has held for the past year. If he signs with another franchise, continuing in the academy role could create a potential conflict of interest - something sources say he is eager to avoid.

What's next for R Ashwin?

Ashwin played nine matches for CSK last season. He still brings plenty to the table.

He has taken 187 wickets and scored over 800 runs in 221 IPL games. Whether he is traded or enters the auction pool, franchises are likely to show strong interest.
