Manchester United’s Premier League opener against Arsenal was expected to have noise both on and off the pitch.

The 1958, a well-known supporters’ group, had been planning a march against the club’s ownership. The focus was set on minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS.

But the protest will not go ahead.

The group has decided to postpone it after a major fan survey revealed there is no clear agreement among supporters. The result has bought Ratcliffe more time — at least for now.

The surprising survey result that stopped a Man Utd protest

The 1958 said almost 26,000 fans took part in the poll. Around 63% believe Ratcliffe and INEOS should be judged on their actions so far.

Yet 68% think they should be given more time — from Christmas to over a season — to prove themselves. That mixed feeling, according to the group, made a protest risky.

In their statement, they said it would be “irresponsible to risk creating a situation that could result in any ‘red on red’ conflict inside or outside the stadium.” The group stressed unity was more important than rushing into action.

The decision comes during a period of big changes at Old Trafford. Ratcliffe took control of football operations in February 2024.

Since then, he has overseen unpopular job cuts but also major spending, including the $100 million signing of Benjamin Sesko. The Glazers remain majority owners and continue to face strong criticism.

Fans will still keep a close eye on Ratcliffe’s next moves. The 1958 hinted that August 23 — when a share freeze ends — could be a decisive date in the ownership battle.

For now, the focus shifts back to the pitch. United face Arsenal in a clash where three points might not solve off-field issues, but at least it could stop some of the boos. After all, it’s easier to unite over goals than ownership rows.
