Liverpool have stepped up their game in the summer transfer window this term. They have already signed Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong and are also linked with players like Florian Wirtz and Milos Kerkez, who are also close to joining the Reds.

However, the reigning Premier League champions are not done yet. There are reports that they may sign a new striker and a midfielder this summer as they aim to defend their league crown whilst also contending for the Champions League title next season.

Therefore, as per reports via The Athletic, Liverpool have stepped their pursuit for Olympic Lyon midfielder Rayan Cherki. Liverpool manager Arne Slot has reportedly held talks with Cherki's representatives when he travelled to the south of France last week.

Cherki has been reportedly linked with a move to Manchester City over the last couple of weeks. While several other clubs are also interested in the French playmaker, City prioritised his signature as they see him as a long-term fix in midfield since the departure of Kevin de Bruyne.

Several reports suggest that City retracted from Wirtz because they saw more value in securing the Frenchman, who is available at only €40 million. Lyon's financial constraints mean that they are forced to let him go this summer.

Slot reportedly had cut short his holiday last week and travelled to the south of France to meet with Cherki and his representatives.

However, Liverpool had talks with Cherki before they intensified their chase for Wirtz. Now, it will be interesting to see if they keep pushing for the Frenchman.

What did Cherki say about Liverpool & Manchester City links?

Cherki was one of the best players in the Ligue 1 last season with eight goals and 11 assists from 30 appearances. Overall, he also provided eight assists and netted four goals in 12 Europa League fixtures.

Recently in an interview with  L’Equipe, he was asked about adapting to the Premier League if he makes the move to Liverpool or Manchester City.

"I’m ready for any system. I work every day, physically and mentally, to be ready," Cherki said. "Above all, I’m trying to choose the best option for me, to develop as a person and a footballer."

"You’re never sure of anything. But I’ll say it: I did what I wanted to do at OL, be a true Lyonnais and give everything for my club,’ Cherki said.

"I didn’t leave the ship in difficulty. I stayed, I gritted my teeth. I cried, I laughed, I was scared. But a man has to be like that, it’s part of his DNA. Even when it’s hard, even when you cry, even when you’re scared, you have to go to war for your club."

Despite Liverpool's interest in the 21-year-old Frenchman, City are confident of securing their man.
