The World Test Championship (WTC) points system is designed to reward teams based on their performance in individual Test matches.

Points are allocated for wins, draws, and ties, making each game critical in the race to the WTC final to be played in 2027.

The 2025-27 cycle started with the match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh at the Galle, and the two-year-long cycle shall see the exciting India tour of England and the Ashes in Australia, among other series.

Below is a breakdown of how the points are calculated for the WTC, along with details on penalties and percentage points.

How are WTC points awarded for wins and draws?

In the WTC, each Test match contributes to a team's standing, with points being awarded as follows:

  • 12 points for a win: Teams earn 12 points for every Test match victory.
  • 4 points for a draw: Both teams receive 4 points if the match ends in a draw.
  • 6 points for a tie: In case of a tie, both teams are awarded 6 points each.

What happens in case of slow over-rates?

Teams need to maintain a specific over rate during Test matches, and penalties are enforced if they fail to do so. For every over a team that falls short, they are docked 1 point from their total tally.

How do percentage points work in the WTC?

While teams accumulate points through match results, rankings in the WTC standings are determined by percentage of points (POP).

POP is calculated as the ratio of points a team has earned to the total points they could have earned across all matches. This ensures that rankings reflect a team's performance relative to the number of matches they play.
