On Friday, June 20, Shubman Gill started off his new assignment as the captain of the Indian Test team in England in some style.
Batting at 4, he came into action after a good first wicket partnership for India and a quick wicket to join Yashasvi Jaiswal in the middle.

Shutting the doubters, Gill stood for all day long with Jaiswal, followed by his deputy, Rishabh Pant, to carry his bat with 127 runs ahead of his name.
However, the Indian captain could face action from the ICC for breaching the regulations. Check the details below.

Why could Shubman Gill face action from the ICC?
The 25-year-old is in line to face some music from the match referee for wearing black socks in the match when only white, cream or light grey colours are allowed in Test cricket.
According to the ICC’s Clothing and Equipment Regulations, Gill could be in breach of Clause 19.45 for wearing black socks, a colour explicitly disallowed in Test matches.
The law was updated back in May 2023, where any deliberate deviation from the colours would be considered as a Level 1 offence, and the player will be fined 10 to 20% of the match fees.
Notably, Gill used the same colored socks on the start of Day 2, making it clear that it was a deliberate use of the colour on the prior day.
