Explained: How Washington Freedom qualified for MLC 2025 final without winning Qualifier 1 image

The defending champions of the Major League Cricket (MLC), Washington Freedom (WF) have reserved their spot in the final. They qualified for the Grand final ahead of Texas Super Kings (TSK) but without beating them in Qualifier 1.

After finishing in the top two of the points table after the league phase, Washington and Texas were all set to lock horns in Dallas on July 8. However, the constant drizzles at TSK's home in Dallas meant that the match had to be abandoned without a toss.

MLC 2025: How did Washington Freedom qualify for the final?

Led by the Australian all-rounder Glenn Maxwell, Washington started off the season with a massive 123-run loss against the San Francisco Unicorns (SF) in Oakland.

However, in the remainder of the season, they were only defeated once, and that was a rain-affected game against TSK.

With only 2 losses in 10 matches, they finished top of the table with 16 points, two more than Texas.  On the other hand, Texas finished second despite being level on points with SF due to their superior net run-rate.

As there was no reserve day for Qualifier 1, Washington Freedom will now play the final, having finished in a higher position on the points table.

Are Texas Super Kings knocked out of MLC 2025?

No, TSK is not eliminated from MLC 2025. They will have one more shot at the final because they finished second on the table.

They will face the winner of the eliminator between MI New York and San Francisco Unicorns.
