Which Tests should Jasprit Bumrah play in IND vs ENG series? Listing down pace-friendly tracks in five-match tour image

India suffered a painful five-wicket defeat in the first Test at Headingley, which ended on June 24, 2025, and now trail the five-match series 0-1.

Jasprit Bumrah was among the few bright spots, grabbing a five-wicket haul (5/83). However, as per the team management, the pace spearhead will only feature in three out of five Tests.

With the second Test beginning July 2 at Edgbaston, the key question now is: which remaining venues should India use Bumrah in, considering his workload and pitch conditions? Let’s explore that in detail.

Which Tests should Jasprit Bumrah play in IND vs ENG series?

Edgbaston Test: July 2–6, 2025

Edgbaston is set to host the second Test just eight days after Headingley. That turnaround time makes it a risky choice for Bumrah’s body, especially after he bowled 43.4 overs in Leeds.

Statistically, Edgbaston has not been a favourite ground for pacers. The average first-innings total here is 349, suggesting help for batters more than bowlers.

The Indian think tank may prefer giving Bumrah a rest here and instead give chances to Arshdeep Singh or Akash Deep, who are fresh and eager to perform.

Lord’s Test: July 10–14, 2025

There’s no debate about this one. Lord’s is historically known as a pacer’s paradise, especially during Days 1 and 2, thanks to its famous slope and consistent seam and swing movement. Since 2021, pacers have averaged nearly eight wickets per innings at this venue.

With a week-long break between Edgbaston and Lord’s, Bumrah will be recharged and ready. His bowling style matches perfectly with what Lord’s demands.

Old Trafford Test: July 23–27, 2025

Old Trafford in Manchester will be India’s fourth stop in the series. Its track offers good bounce and carry, which has often assisted pacers early in the game.Given the surface, this venue is ideal for India to unleash their best pacer.

Oval Test: July 31–August 4, 2025

The Oval, which hosts the final Test, is often better suited for batters, particularly in the second half of a game. It is known to be a flatter track, and its behaviour over five days usually helps spinners more than fast bowlers.

Considering Bumrah’s usage is limited to three Tests, The Oval may not offer as much value for his skillset.

With four Tests remaining, Bumrah should be carefully rotated. Playing him at Lord’s and Old Trafford makes the most tactical sense. India need Bumrah firing at his best to pull the series back and that starts with using him smartly.
