Led by Temba Bavuma on the field and with the bat, South Africa defeated Australia in the final of the World Test Championship for the 2023-25 cycle at the Lord's.
After electing to bat first, the Proteas bundled Australia for a total of 212 with a five-fer from Kagiso Rabada. However, they did not manage to take advantage of it and conceded a 74-run lead in the first innings.
Bowlers did well again to restrict the Aussies to 207 but chasing 282 was another big task ahead of them before Aiden Markram decided to take the matter into his own hands and scored a brilliant 136.

Supported him with the bat was captain Bavuma, who had pulled up his hamstring but got a crucial 66 to add 147 for the 3rd wicket. With this leader's attitude, he became only the 2nd Protea captain to win an ICC event with them.

Before Bavuma's leadership, South Africa came close to winning on numerous occasions. However, the only trophy that they won before this was in 1998 when they defeated the West Indies in the final of the ICC Champions Trophy (then Knockout Trophy).
The late Hansie Cronje was their skipper in that tournament, who took 2/44 in 10 overs with Jacques Kallis' 5/30. The skipper also scored a 61*(77) to clinch the trophy.
