Abhimanyu Easwaran's long wait for a Test debut has been one of the more puzzling stories in Indian cricket. Despite closing in on 8,000 first-class runs at an average near 48, the Bengal opener has yet to break into the playing XI.
Since his first call-up three years ago, more than a dozen players have made their Test debuts ahead of him - while he has travelled with the squad to tours in Australia and England without getting a game.

With India's next red-ball series in October against West Indies, a fresh opening could be on the horizon.
Sourav Ganguly backs Abhimanyu Easwaran for No. 3 slot in Tests
Former India captain Sourav Ganguly believes the unsettled No. 3 spot in the Test side could be Easwaran's gateway into the XI. Speaking at a promotional event in Kolkata, Ganguly told Times of India:
"He has age on his side. I still believe he will get his chance. It's only the No. 3 slot that looked a bit fragile. Maybe Easwaran will be tried out there."
India tried both Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair in that role during the England tour but neither could get things going.
Easwaran's domestic numbers are impressive. Since the start of 2023, he has scored 2,095 first-class runs at an average above 56 with eight centuries.

That figure climbs close to 60 since early 2024. His reliability at the top has also earned him leadership roles with India A - including tours overseas.
Bengal coach Arun Lal praised his work ethic, calling him "a team man" and one of the fittest players in the domestic circuit.
Easwaran will play in the upcoming Duleep Trophy for East Zone - led by Ishan Kishan, before India's home Test series against West Indies in October.
Later in the year, the Proteas will visit for two Tests - with the series opener at Eden Gardens (Easwaran's home ground) - providing a fitting stage should he finally get the nod.
