Shubman Gill is enjoying a dream start to his captaincy career. Appointed as India's 37th Test captain just weeks ago, the 25-year-old has now etched his name into the history books.

He has surpassed the legendary Sunil Gavaskar to register the most runs by an Indian in a single Test match. Gill's remarkable performance came in the ongoing second Test against England at Edgbaston.

He scored a commanding 269 in the first innings and at the time of this writing, he is unbeaten on 100 in the second. That took his match tally to 369 runs - more than Gavaskar's 344 against the West Indies in 1971.

Gavaskar’s 344 at Port of Spain had stood as the gold standard for over five decades. It included 124 in the first innings and a monumental 220 in the second.

Now, Gill has gone past it in just his second Test as captain. The Punjab-born batter also became the first Asian Test skipper to score a double century in SENA (South Africa, England, New Zealand, Australia) countries.

While Gill now tops India's list, the overall world record still belongs to England's Graham Gooch - who scored 456 runs (333 and 123) against India at Lord's in 1990. He is followed by Mark Taylor (426), Kumar Sangakkara (424) and Brian Lara (400).

If Gill can convert his current 97* into another century, he will become only the second Indian after Gavaskar to notch a double ton and hundred in the same Test - a feat that would cap off an already iconic match.
