Shubman Gill might be walking into a new role soon. With Suryakumar Yadav moving closer to the twilight of his career, India’s selectors and Gautam Gambhir are believed to be looking at Gill as the future captain in T20 internationals.

The Asia Cup 2025 could be the first step in that direction, where Gill has been named vice-captain.

Why is Shubman Gill being seen as India’s next leader?

Gill has been in top form across formats, especially during the recent tour of England where he scored heavily and also showed maturity in tough situations.

At just 25, he is already India’s Test captain, which signals the trust placed in him by the management.

Selectors believe Gill has the calmness, temperament and authority needed to lead in the shorter format too.

Gambhir, who attended the selection meeting online, reportedly backed the idea strongly, saying India must prepare a long-term option for captaincy.

What role did Suryakumar Yadav’s age play in this decision?

Suryakumar, who is set to turn 35 soon, remains India’s T20 skipper for now.

However, the management is aware that he cannot be the face of the team’s leadership for too long. Finding a replacement early allows a smooth transition instead of a sudden change.

The plan is for Gill to work closely with Surya during the Asia Cup and upcoming series, learning the ropes before eventually taking charge.

Was Shubman Gill always part of India’s T20I plans?

Though he missed several T20I series over the last year due to Test commitments and minor fitness issues, Gill has always been in the scheme of things. In fact, he had been vice-captain in earlier assignments.

Agarkar explained that Gill’s absence wasn’t due to poor form but scheduling. Now, with his return, the selectors want to give him a stable run so he can settle in as a key figure in the T20 squad.

Gill’s return means the team management will need to reshuffle the top order. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson had built a strong opening stand in recent games but one of them will have to make way now with Gill coming in.
