In a video on his YouTube channel, Sidhu raised doubts over Shubman Gill’s readiness to lead the Indian Test team -- especially in overseas conditions like England. It is being widely reported that Gill is all set to take the Test captaincy, replacing Rohit Sharma, who announced his retirement from red-ball format earlier this week.

What did Navjot Singh Sidhu say on Shubman Gill’s potential Test captaincy?

Sidhu’s comments come at a time when India is staring at one of the most challenging series in world cricket: a five-Test series in England during the damp and seaming conditions of June and July.

According to Sidhu, this is not the time to experiment with leadership or rely on untested players. He acknowledged Gill’s potential but didn’t mince words when evaluating his performance outside India.

“Gill can become captain but if you look at his record, he hasn’t done that well overseas. You can score as many runs as you want, but until you prove yourself abroad, the credibility doesn’t come,” Sidhu said on his YouTube channel.

He said that in a high-pressure tour like England -- India needs someone who can lead from the front and suggested Jasprit Bumrah as a better candidate for the role. Sidhu also argued that Kohli’s experience and psychological impact on the opposition remain unmatched.

He made it clear that he sees a bright future for Gill but the concern is about timing and the demands of the England tour. The message was clear: experience trumps promise -- at least for now.
