Electing to bat first, Multan got off to a shaky start as Yasir Khan and David Willey were dismissed inside the powerplay. Usman Khan's half-century (57) and Iftikhar Ahmed's quickfire 32 ensured that they posted 159/9.

In reply, Islamabad slipped to 129/7, despite Martin Guptill's 50. All-rounder Imad Wasim, along with some solid blows from Naseem Shah, brought the scores level with 2 balls to go. Naseem was dismissed by Mohammad Ali before number 10 Hunain Shah guided the final ball to the boundary, sparking wild celebrations.

Multan Sultans lose third consecutive PSL final: Which teams have lost the most T20 finals?

The result in the final means that Multan have lost the three PSL finals in a row; by 42 runs to Lahore Qalandars in 2022, by 1 run to Lahore Qalandars in 2023 and now by 2 wickets to Islamabad United. They lifted the title in 2021, but it has been a painful story since then.

They are not the team with the worst record in finals, though. Karachi Dolphins have lost all seven of their National T20 Cup finals, one of them in a Super Over as well. Two T20 teams have lost six finals each. In South Africa's CSA T20 Challenge, Dolphins have lost six of their seven finals. In the same competition, Warriors have lost five out of six finals in addition to the 2010 CLT20 final.
