India began the day in a position of strength, leading by 322 runs after England had been bowled out for 319. Opener Yashasvi Jaiswal was not out on 104, but retired hurt on Saturday evening after his back began to trouble him. India were also boosted by the news that spinner R Ashwin would rejoin the squad after he had left due to a family emergency.

Jaiswal resumed his innings after the fall of Shubman Gill, run out for 91. In the company of fellow Mumbai batter and India debutant Sarfaraz Khan, he smashed his way to a magnificent double hundred, his second in the series.
