The hype over Jofra Archer's Test comeback is genuine, but not everyone is sure the timing is optimal.

While supporters can't wait for England paceman Archer to don whites once more, ex-skipper Michael Vaughan isn't convinced yet.

He believes it's premature to play Archer in the high-pressure second Test against India at Edgbaston next week considering the prolonged hiatus and minimal red-ball outing under his belt.

Archer was busy playing for Sussex during England’s five-wicket win in the series opener at Headingley, his first first-class game in nearly four years. And although England skipper Ben Stokes called it “exciting” to see Archer back, Vaughan wants more groundwork before a Test comeback.

Why did Michael Vaughan urge caution on Jofra Archer return?

In a video posted by the BBC on Wednesday, Vaughan made his stance clear, “No. He’s had four years out of action, I don’t see what the great rush is. Just give him a couple of games for Sussex and then bring him in for the game at Lord’s. I would continue with the attack that bowled so well here at Leeds this week.”

During England’s win over India in the first Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Test, Archer was turning out for Sussex against Durham, where he returned figures of 1-32 in 18 overs.

With England holding a 1-0 lead, the squad for the second Test at Edgbaston, starting July 2, is yet to be named.

Archer’s return could prove crucial in the long run, especially with the Ashes in Australia looming later this year. But for now, the call is patience.

England likely playing XI for Edgbaston (2nd Test)

Building on their Headingley success, England look set to stick with the side that clinched the historic chase of 371, their second‑highest ever, with minimal changes.

England likely playing 11: Ben Stokes (C), Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith (WK), Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes
