Tilak Varma, who’s known for his explosive hitting in the IPL with Mumbai Indians, had a rough beginning to his One-Day Cup journey in England.

Playing for Glamorgan in his debut match, the young left-hander was dismissed without troubling the scorers, falling for a three-ball duck.

Though it wasn’t the start he would’ve hoped for, his team still managed to put up a strong total.

How did Tilak Varma’s debut in the One-Day Cup go for Glamorgan?

Varma, who joined Glamorgan for the ongoing Royal London One-Day Cup, made his debut on August 4 in a game against Hampshire at Neath.

Unfortunately, the 21-year-old couldn’t leave an impact in his very first game. Coming in after an early breakthrough, Varma faced only three deliveries before being dismissed by Ned Leonard.

Despite Tilak’s early exit, Hampshire ended up scoring big. They posted 324/6 in their 50 overs, thanks to captain Nick Gubbins who smashed 144 and wicketkeeper Ben Mayes who added a handy 74 off just 55 balls.

How has Tilak Varma performed in England and in international cricket?

This is Varma’s first season in English domestic cricket, and he has already made some noise with the red ball.

In four County Championship matches before the One-Day Cup, he had scored two centuries and a fifty. But the white-ball game didn’t start well for him.

Since making his T20I debut for India in 2023, Varma has impressed in the shorter format. He has played 25 T20Is, scoring runs at an average of 49.93 and a strike rate of 155.

He has played four ODIs matches as well and scored 68 runs at an average of just 22.66. In List A cricket overall, Tilak averages close to 47 after 36 games.

In first-class cricket, too, he has an average of 52 from 22 matches. He’s yet to make his debut in Test cricket for India.

Glamorgan’s next match in the One-Day Cup is scheduled for August 7. Fans will be hoping for a better show from Tilak as he looks to bounce back and make an impression in the tournament.
