In a gripping encounter at the first Test between India and England, the visitors, led by Joe Root, showcased exceptional bowling skills to bundle India within the first hour on day three at Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

Root claimed four crucial wickets for just 79 runs to restrict India to 436 in their first innings. A pivotal point in the match occurred when Root trapped Jadeja leg before on 87.

The off-spinner continued to deliver by getting rid of Jasprit Bumrah in the following ball with a peach of a delivery that bamboozled the Indian pacer.

Earlier, Root got a well-settled Yashasvi Jaiswal on Day 2 for 80 and also KS Bharat, when he looked set for a big score while batting on 41. Three out of his four wickets have come from batsmen who were well-versed with the conditions after spending significant time on the crease, which shows his effectiveness on the turning track.

Jack Leach and Rehan Ahmed looked ordinary, whereas, it was evident that debutant Peter Hartley still needs time to get used to the rigours of test cricket. Hence, there is little doubt that despite having three frontline spinners, Root was the key piece of England's bowling attack.

Root likes to bowl in Indian conditions and history shows that the part-time off-spinner has tasted considerable success in sub-continent conditions. In the Ahmedabad Test in 2021, Root took five wickets in under seven overs, showcasing his bowling prowess. In the fourth innings, Root might just once again be Ben Stokes' trump card on a dusty track in Hyderabad.

What is Joe Root's record in India?

Joe Root has picked 12 wickets in 12 innings in India at an average of 23.50.
