Jadeja’s playful tickle leaves umpire Gaffney in splits

It began during India’s first innings when Jadeja, while batting, was repeatedly seen stepping out of his crease and walking down the pitch. Umpire Gaffney, noticing the consistent forward movements, gently cautioned him about staying away from the centre of the wicket.

A few of the English players were also seen concerned that Jadeja’s running could scuff up the pitch, creating rough patches that might assist Indian spinners later.

Later, during England’s second innings, Jadeja cheekily blurted, “Huh! I’m cheating?” — with a dramatic tone of mock indignation — followed by a light tap on umpire Gaffney’s arm, and a tickle. The umpire couldn’t help but laugh it off, as the players and commentators chuckled along.

Jadeja has always been known for his cheeky moments on the field. Although a fierce competitor, Jadeja also manages to bring a smile to everyone's face through his humility and fun. The moment has since gone viral across social media.

India in command to level the series ahead of the Lords' Test

The Edgbaston test is at its business end with 536 runs still required for the hosts, while India needs 7 more wickets to level the series. India is well ahead, and in command of the game and one would expect them to bowl out England on the final day and level the series.

Shubman Gill continued his sublime form, scoring yet another century (161 runs) in the 3rd innings of the game and he was supported very well by the other Indian batters to set a monumental 608-run target for the hosts.

Jadeja himself is having a fantastic outing with the bat in this game, scoring half-centuries in both innings of the Test. The senior all-rounder will also have an important role with the ball when India turns out on the fifth day to register a victory.

Match summary:

  • IND 587 & 427/6 d
  • ENG 407 & 72/3 (16)
  • Day 4: Stumps - England need 536 runs
